In a recent blog we discussed the phase in which a company realizes that they are in need of a new ERP or CRM software system and in the article prior to this one we revealed 5 ways to find a proper implementation partner. Now, let’s dive into what you should be doing in order to achieve a successful software initiative.

  1. Know Your Why

In order to be a business with a successful software solution, you have to know the ins and outs of your software initiative – not the technical ins and outs (that comes later) but the core reasoning that is driving this change. Most companies who look to implement a new solution hear from their partner things like: “WHAT do you want to achieve” and “this is HOW we will do it” but the main focus should be on WHY you want to upgrade.

This idea of “Why”, is what would be considered governance thinking. Focusing on the mindset of why you want a new software implementation is key when transferring knowledge to the implementation team.  All instructions, all actions, all goals and even results should garner the question “Why?” and in doing this, you should then have the ability to better prioritize actions and activities which will lead to strategic and maximum payback outcomes.

Do not lose sight of what the original objective was. Don’t get swept up in the technology aspect of the project. Remember the initial goals and maintain that mindset.

  1. Communication

It is so important to maintain a level of constant communication between external and internal project teams. Seems pretty obvious right? More often than not, most people tend to avoid difficult conversations that need to be had. In this circumstance, the most difficult conversations should always be openly addressed. Staying on top of all aspects of the project are a must, with regular reviews of status, budget and original projections. No one wants an out of control project that leads to failure.

If you keep these two approaches in mind, the software initiative should cultivate a strong culture for success and allow for streamlined implementation with your technology partner.
