Use Natural Language to Build Segments in Dynamics 365 Marketing
All customer journeys require a target audience. A target audience can be created using the Dynamics 365 Marketing segmentation tool. A segment is a group of related Contacts. There are Dynamics Segments - which constantly evolve based on the criteria given and then there are Static Segments - which are a snapshot in time, manually maintained.
Here's how you can build a segment in Dynamics 365 Marketing.
There are many different ways to build a segment. Segments can be created using data in CRM, marketing behavior, other segments - or a combination thereof. In the past, all segments were built using the segment builder. The segment builder required you to know how data was setup in your database. In October 2020, Microsoft released a new way to build CRM data driven segments using what they refer to as 'Natural Language'. This new feature is available for preview.
In order to use this new feature, you must first enable it. To do so, navigate to Dynamics > Marketing > Settings > Feature Switches. Enable the toggle named "Segmentation Natural Language Queries."
Now click "Save" in the upper right hand corner.
Natural Language is now enabled for building segments! Let's try it out. Navigate to Dynamics > Marketing > Segments. Click New > New Dynamic Segment. Skip the Segment Templates. To begin, give your new segment a name such as "Contacts in Ohio" then click "Add query block". Notice that above the default Contact entity, you now see a field that says "Who would you like in this segment?"
Enter the information you would like to use to create the segment into this new field. For example, "Contacts who live in Ohio" - then press enter to submit the criteria. Presto! You now have a segment that looks for all Contacts where Address 1: State/Province is Ohio.
Just like any Segment, you can add, edit, and remove criteria. Let's do another example. Start by changing the name to "Birthday Contacts". Next, replace your original Natural Language segment with "Contacts who's birthday is today" and press enter. You now have a segment that looks for all Contacts that have a birthday today.
So as you can see, the new feature for Natural Language makes it easier to create segments.
